Free replacement vs pro-rata, in plain terms

Indian battery warranties are almost always quoted as two numbers added together — for example 36 + 30. They are not the same kind of cover, and the difference decides whether a replacement costs you nothing or a part payment.

Free replacement (FR)

The first number. If the battery fails a load test inside this window because of a manufacturing defect, you get a brand-new battery at no cost. No depreciation, no part payment. This is the period that actually matters when you compare two batteries on price.

Pro-rata (PR)

The second number. After free replacement ends, you are entitled to a credit against a new battery proportional to the pro-rata months still unused. You pay the balance. A battery late in its pro-rata window yields only a small credit, so the practical value tails off.

Why the total can mislead

A battery advertised as "48 months warranty" might be 24 + 24 — only two years of genuinely free cover. Another at "44 months" could be 24 + 20. Always ask for the split, not the sum. The tool above shows both parts separately for exactly this reason.

What is not covered

Physical damage, a tampered or missing warranty card, dry-out from missed water top-ups, damage caused by a faulty alternator or a persistent deep discharge, and use outside the rated application. A charging-system fault will kill a new battery too — get the alternator checked before replacing.

Warranty periods by Amaron series

These are the periods printed on the manufacturer's application chart, and the figures the calculator uses. Cross-check yours against the warranty card supplied with the battery.

Making a claim: what actually happens

A warranty claim is a test result, not an argument. Here is the sequence we follow so a claim goes through the first time.

  • Bring the card, invoice and battery. The purchase date must be legible on the warranty card. A missing card is the single most common reason claims are refused.
  • Free digital load and voltage test. We record open-circuit voltage, cranking performance under load and, on flooded batteries, electrolyte level and specific gravity.
  • Charging system check. If the alternator is over- or under-charging, the battery is a symptom. We check output before approving a swap, otherwise the replacement fails too.
  • Claim logged with the brand. Free replacement is issued against the test report. A pro-rata claim is settled as a credit against a new battery of the same series.
  • Fitting and disposal. The replacement is fitted, tested again, and the old battery is taken for authorised recycling.

Photograph your warranty card and invoice on the day you buy the battery. Cards fade, tear and go missing from glove boxes, and a clear photo has settled plenty of claims for our customers.

Warranty questions we get asked

What is the difference between free replacement and pro-rata?

Free replacement gives you a brand-new battery at no cost if a defect is confirmed. Pro-rata gives you a partial credit toward a new battery, based on the unexpired pro-rata months. A "36+30" warranty is 36 months of the first, then 30 months of the second.

How is my pro-rata credit worked out?

Proportionally, on the pro-rata months you have not used. With 30 pro-rata months of which 12 have passed, roughly 18/30 of the current list price is available as credit. The brand's prevailing price list sets the final number, which is why the calculator labels it an estimate.

Does the clock start at manufacture or at purchase?

At purchase, as recorded on the warranty card and invoice. The manufacturing date on the case is a separate concern — a battery that sat in a warehouse for months before sale has already lost some capacity, so check it is fresh when you buy.

I lost my warranty card. Can I still claim?

Usually not on its own. Some brands will consider a claim against a GST invoice that clearly shows the battery serial number, but the card is the primary document. Bring whatever you have and we will check what the brand will accept.

Can I claim in Nagpur if I bought the battery in another city?

Generally yes. Brand warranties run through the manufacturer's authorised network, so any authorised dealer can process a claim if the card and invoice are intact. Bring both and we will test the battery and log it.

My battery died in 14 months. Is that normal?

No — that is well inside free replacement on every series. Get it tested before assuming it is worn out, because a charging fault or a parasitic drain is often the real cause. Our fault troubleshooter helps narrow it down, and the starter and alternator pages explain the usual culprits.

Think you have a claim?

Send us a photo of the battery label and your warranty card. We will confirm the remaining cover, book a free load test, and tell you honestly whether a claim will stand.
