What LFP is, and why it is used for storage
Lithium is not one chemistry. Phone and laptop cells are cobalt-based, tuned for the most energy in the smallest space — right for a pocket, wrong for a wall through a Nagpur May. Inverter and solar packs use lithium iron phosphate, or LFP.
Thermal stability
The iron-phosphate cathode is the most stable of the common lithium chemistries, which is why it ended up in storage.
Cycle life
Life is counted in cycles, not years. LFP is rated for far more cycles than lead-acid, at a much deeper discharge.
Flat discharge curve
Voltage holds up through most of the discharge, so fans and lights do not dim as the evening goes on.
Sealed, lighter, no fumes
No water top-ups, no acid, no hydrogen venting, and a fraction of the weight for the same usable energy.
Usable capacity is the honest comparison
Most arguments about lithium against lead-acid go wrong at the same point: people compare the number printed on the case. That is not what you use. Lead-acid should not routinely go below roughly 50% depth of discharge if it is to reach its rated life. LFP is built to cycle deep.
In round numbers, as an illustration and not the specification of any product: a 12 V lead-acid battery of about 150 Ah holds roughly 1.8 kWh on paper, but using half leaves about 0.9 kWh a day. A 12 V LFP pack of about 100 Ah holds roughly 1.2 kWh, and cycling deep you can use most of it, so roughly 1 kWh. The smaller-sounding pack does the same daily work.
Size the requirement first. The inverter sizing calculator turns your appliance list and backup hours into a figure.
Lithium LFP compared with lead-acid
Lead-acid is not the loser here. It wins on upfront cost, and on the thing nobody puts in a brochure: you can walk into a shop in Nagpur and have a like-for-like replacement fitted today.
| Consideration | Lead-acid (tubular) | Lithium (LFP) |
|---|---|---|
| Usable depth of discharge | About half, for rated life | Deep cycling routine; most usable |
| Cycle life | A few hundred to a thousand | Several thousand, maker dependent |
| Weight per usable kWh | Heavy, a two-person lift | Roughly a third or less |
| Charge acceptance | Slow taper, hours to finish | High current; refills faster |
| Maintenance | Water top-ups and cleaning | None on the cells; check the BMS |
| Floor space | Trolley or stand | Compact, wall or rack |
| Upfront cost | Clearly lower | Considerably higher |
| Cost per usable cycle | Higher over the install life | Lower, if you reach the cycles |
| Safety and siting | Acid and hydrogen; needs ventilation | Stable, no acid; needs shade and a BMS |
| Typical use case | Occasional backup on a budget | Daily deep cycling, solar |
Where lithium fits in Nagpur, and where it does not
Worth considering
Homes and shops with frequent or long cuts, which cycle the battery hard every day. Solar, where daily deep discharge is the point rather than the exception — see the solar battery section. Premises where floor space or weight is a real constraint. And any install where nobody will check the water level.
Not worth it
An occasional backup that spends its life on float will not cycle enough for the extra outlay to come back. A tight budget is a legitimate reason to buy lead-acid. And if you need a same-hour swap, that is a lead-acid job — our inverter range is what we fit this afternoon.
The summer-heat question
Nagpur regularly passes 45 °C, and heat is what kills lead-acid here: it drives water out of the electrolyte and accelerates grid corrosion. LFP tolerates heat better, a genuine advantage here, but that is not permission to install carelessly. Keep the pack shaded, ventilated and off a hot terrace floor, with a BMS that has a temperature cut-off.
The BMS is the part to ask about most
An LFP pack is cells plus a battery management system, and the BMS separates a pack that lasts a decade from one that fails in its second summer. It balances cells so none is overworked, and protects against over-charge, over-discharge, over-current and temperature excursions. Cells are similar between suppliers; the BMS and the after-sales path are where packs differ.
Confirm inverter compatibility before you buy. A lead-acid inverter charges in bulk, absorption and float stages and may equalise at a raised voltage. That profile is not always suitable for LFP: it can leave the pack undercharged, or trip the BMS. Send us your inverter model.
What to ask before you buy
- Cell chemistry, in writing. Ask whether it is LFP; lithium-ion alone tells you nothing.
- Cycle life at a stated depth of discharge. A bare number is meaningless.
- BMS specification. Cell balancing, over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, temperature.
- Warranty terms and who honours them. How long, what is excluded, and where a claim is settled.
- Compatibility with your inverter model, not a general assurance.
- Installation and ventilation. Mounting, clearances, temperature limits and where it may not go.
A caution on unbranded imported packs: an unnamed BMS, no serviceable warranty path and nobody locally who will open them. When one fails there is nothing to claim against and nothing to repair.
What we actually stock, honestly
Our depth of stock and our fastest turnaround are in lead-acid — Exide, Amaron, SF Sonic and Luminous — and on a working day we can put a lead-acid inverter battery in your house within hours. Lithium is a smaller, more specialised line: Amara Raja sells a lithium range under the Amaron Quanta banner, and several inverter manufacturers now offer matched LFP packs. Rather than print capacities and warranty terms that change between production runs, ask us for what is currently available against your inverter and your load, and we will quote it with the cell chemistry, the BMS specification and the warranty terms in writing.
Sensible order: size it with the inverter calculator, read the buying guide and the inverter battery range, then send us the numbers. Also Amaron, Exide, industrial, auto rickshaw and the FAQs.
Lithium battery questions we get asked
Are lithium batteries worth it for a home inverter in India?
It depends how hard you cycle it. If cuts are frequent and long, or you run solar and discharge daily, LFP works out cheaper per usable cycle despite costing far more to buy. If the inverter sits on float, the payback never arrives.
How long does a LiFePO4 battery last?
Life is counted in cycles, not years. A good LFP pack is rated for several thousand cycles at a deep discharge, against a few hundred to around a thousand for lead-acid at half discharge. Ask for the stated depth of discharge.
Can I replace my existing inverter battery with lithium?
Not always, and this is the check most people skip. A lead-acid inverter charges in bulk, absorption and float stages, and some equalise at a raised voltage. That profile can leave an LFP pack undercharged or trip its BMS.
Do you sell lithium batteries in Nagpur?
We do, but we will be straight about where our strength is. Our deepest stock and fastest service is lead-acid, as an authorised dealer for Exide, Amaron, SF Sonic and Luminous. Lithium is a more specialised line, ordered to your installation.
Is a lithium battery safe in Nagpur summer heat?
LFP is the most thermally stable of the common lithium chemistries, which is why it is used for storage rather than the chemistry in phones. It handles our summer better than lead-acid, which loses water in heat. Keep it shaded and ventilated.
Is LiFePO4 the same as the lithium-ion in phones and laptops?
No. Phones and laptops use cobalt-based chemistries chosen for maximum energy in minimum space. LFP gives up energy density for a more stable cathode, a flatter discharge voltage and a longer cycle life.
Cycle life, depth of discharge and weight figures here are general characteristics of the two chemistries, not the specification of any product.
